A Brooklyn mother has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for beating her four-year-old son to death with a broomstick.
Zarah Coombs was sentenced on Wednesday, after pleading guilty in January to charges of manslaughter and endangerment of a child.
When she is eventually released from prison, the 28-year-old will be on probation for five years.
Brooklyn mother Zarah Coombs, 28, was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Wednesday for the January 2017 death of her son Zamair, age four
Coombs beat her son to death with a broomstick when he dropped an egg on the floor of their Brownsville apartment
'Little Zamair was an innocent boy who did not deserve to die,' District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said after the sentencing.
Her boyfriend called police when he came home 20 minutes later and found the boy (pictured) passed out in a plastic container filled with water
'It is truly disturbing that his mother, the person who was supposed to care for his wellbeing and safety, viciously beat him and left him for dead. The defendant has now accepted responsibility for her brutal actions and today’s sentence ensures that she is punished for this crime.'
The incident in question happened in January 2017, when Zarah's son Zamair asked for something to eat.
His mother refused to feed him, so he went to the refrigerator and accidentally dropped an egg on the floor.
Coombs became enraged, grabbed a broomstick and beat Zamair until he fell unconscious.
Then she put him in a plastic storage container filled with water and went to breast feed her baby.
