MasterChef's Adam Liaw opens up about racism

And on Tuesday, former lawyer Adam Liaw revealed his heartbreaking experiences with racism, in a series of candid tweets.

The 38-year-old - who is of Asian descent - said he was brought to tears as he shared his thoughts on the issue, which he spoke about for Harmony Day.

The TV personality added that Asian people will also be 'physically abused for their race,' because it has happened to all his friends he knows. 

'I cried a bit typing that, but that's life,' he added. 

The star started his tweets saying he was in a store of a phone network, when he heard some 'white customers' 'berating' the Asian staff who worked there.

'Not one racial epithet was said, and nobody was being "racist". But this is racism. Racism isn't just for "racists", he said. 

He went on to mention section 18C in the Racial Discrimination Act and all the debate on it and whether it should be changed.

He said he wasn't too concerned about the act but insisted:  'Don't pretend it solves the problems we have in this country with race either way.'

He explained that he doesn't think Australians are racist but worries about 'systemic' racism.

'It’s under-representation media, boardrooms, or the slightest inkling that kids with brown skin are less Australian than if they were white,' Adam said.

Adam - who won the second season of MasterChef - has recently been travelling the world as part of his duties for SBS series Destination Flavour. 

He recently told New Idea that he struggles being away from his young family and wants to have more children. 

'It's hard because we've got two young kids, so it's tough me being away for so long, but I try to be mentally present, even if I'm only home for a day or two,' Adam told the publication.

The star married his wife, Asami Fujitsuk, in 2012 and the couple have two young children, Christopher, 3, and Anna, eleven months.
